apply for a green card 04 by Article Announcement

No matter what you might have heard, applying for a green card is simply no picnic in this day and age. This is especially true in the wake of the September 11th disasters, when this country began to take on a perspective that was decidedly less immigrant friendly. Although there are many sites and other places that tell you that you can easily apply for a green card to bring your whole family over to the USA, most of these are just simply lying. Apply all you want, but applying for a green card does not guarantee that you will receive one. Anyone who tells you that you can easily apply for a green card and be granted citizenship in America is probably trying to rip you off. Believe me, there are only a few ways to get a green card, and none of them is really all that easy.
Of course, the easiest way to apply for a green card is to be married to an American citizen. This is a real possibility for many people as, even in the current anti immigrant climate, we still do honor people's requests to join their spouse in this country, provided their spouse is already an American citizen. Marriage is much more strongly endorsed than almost any other form of connection to an American, but it is not the only way to apply for a green card. If, for example, your parents or your children are citizens, it will be easier for you to gain citizenship. If you have a high level of education, and have employable skills, it will be easier for you to apply for a green card. Then again, on the other side, if you are in a country with a deplorable human rights record, and can prove that your life is threatened because of it, it might be much easier for you to gain refugee status.
No matter what, you have to apply for a green card through the INS, or Immigration and Naturalization Service, and that is one bloated bureaucracy which is not at all interested in making your life any easier. There is often a delay of one, or even of many, years, and that will make life very difficult for you in the mean time. If you are looking for quick entry into the United States, it is easy to get a travel visa from many countries, which will allow you to visit without staying too long. That way, you can be here for up to several months while you wait for your green card application to be processed.
