Learn How To Read

For children, one of the most important things they will do in grammar school is to learn how to read. For most children, they accomplish this quite easily, and they develop a love of reading that will last a lifetime. Other children, however, have a problem when it comes time to learn how to read, and they need a little extra help. This is when parents can offer a little extra help that may not be readily or easily available to them through the school district. For home schooling parents, helping their children to learn how to read is solely on their shoulders.

There are some ready-made programs that parents can use to help their children learn how to read. Hooked On Phonics is a popular one, and seems to have good results. Now that a lot of parents have decided they would like to home school their children, there are more and more programs appearing. I dont know much about different teaching methods, but I do know that today you can find programs for just about any method a parent might wish to use.

Though the requirements for children to enter kindergarten are more complicated than they used to be, dont push your child to learn how to read before they are ready. Some parents, and grandparents, have gone overboard in an attempt to keep their children ahead of the rest of their peers. Its OK to teach them the basics, but your child is going to be just fine, even if they cant read Moby Dick before they start first grade. Too much pressure and learning too fast may end up backfiring.

There are also adults who need to learn how to read. There are many great programs out there that are set up just for this purpose. Our education system is far from perfect, and those with learning disabilities dont always get the help they need. I dont know how they do it, but some graduate from high school and yet do not know how to read. Though they got this far, they are going to need to learn how to read at some point, even if they get a job that requires no reading. If there is no such program near you, find out how to start a program to help illiterate adults learn how to read. This will be a great gift to those in your community, as well as a gift they may never get elsewhere.
