police academy 04 by Article Announcement

The Police Academy movie was one of the classics of my childhood. It was one of those hysterical romps, all about nefarious criminals and goofy cops, good-natured but incompetent. There are several police academy movies, all in the same vein. As a kid, they sort of would make you want to become a police officer, but not really. They portrayed cops in a way that was not that flattering. I never really considered a career in law enforcement when I was a kid. Although at one point I wanted to be a fireman, I never wanted to be a cop.

Then I was suddenly faced with the prospect of having to get a job and work for myself. I had worked in high school and college, but I'd never held a serious job before. I had just graduated college, but the Bush administration had ruined the economy so completely that even a college graduate with high grades could not get a good job. I was looking up the IMDB Police Academy cast when the idea suddenly hit me. Why not attends the Los Angeles police academy?

At first it seemed like a silly idea. I actually put the police academy thoughts out of my head for at least two weeks. I couldn't picture myself being a cop. Although I saw the necessity of police officers, I did not really respect them very much. I have always had a problem with authority, you see, and besides that I have run into a number of corrupt cops. I know people who get let off every time they get pulled over for driving over the speed limit because they have relatives involved in the police academy. I guess this is good for people in police academies, but it is not good for the rest of us.

Then I realized something important. Just because a lot of cops are corrupt does not mean that I would have to be corrupt if I became one. I decided to attend the police academy to try it out. If I did not like it, I could work on a police force for a few years to pay off my loans and then go on to find another job. Either way, having some experience as a law enforcement officer would probably help me. I couldn't see it doing anything to make my resume look bad, and it could make it look better.
