Ahhh. There?s nothing better than climbing into a cozy warm bed at night when winter is at it?s coldest. I tend to keep my house a bit on the cooler side in order to conserve electricity and keep my heating bills down. When I?m starting my nightly routine of getting ready for bed, I turn my electric blanket on in preparation. Once I slide under the sheets and feel the toasty warm blankets, I?m in heaven. I never turn it up too warm but it is always just warm enough to make me feel like I can sprawl out all over my bed without some part of my body freezing.
My mother got me an electric blanket when I was ten years old. We lived in an older house and my bedroom was in the attic. No matter what my parents tried, it was just too drafty and cold for comfortable sleeping. After I had my electric blanket, I never complained again. Since first receiving one and falling in love with it, I?ve never been without an electric blanket. My mom keeps hers on her bed all year long even if she isn?t using it. I put it away once the warm weather arrives. I have a particular spot that I store my electric blanket at so that I always know where it is. Everything in my house has a tendency of being misplaced; I?d hate for that to happen to my electric blanket.
I?m not sure who invented electric blankets but I owe them a lot of gratitude. I have gotten many good nights of sound sleep because of their invention. I suppose that I could sleep with a sweatshirt and sweatpants on in order to stay warm but to me, that is not the idea of comfortable sleeping. I like to be able to sleep comfortably with a T-shirt and shorts on instead of layers and layers just to stay warm. My electric bill has never been drastically affected because of having an electric blanket plugged in all night. In fact, since I am very conscious about conserving electricity, my bills are usually very affordable. Even if my bill did increase a few dollars each month, it would be worthwhile. Getting a warm and solid night of sleep is priceless.
On evenings that it gets really windy and cold, my daughter and I will take our electric blankets out to the family room and make ourselves comfortable in our chairs. It makes for a perfect movie night with hot cocoa and popcorn. I?m so happy that my mother bought me that first electric blanket so many years ago.
