I was desperate. I had been working the same human resources job for years, and I was sick of it. I needed something new. I had heard about secret shoppers jobs, but it was hard for me to believe that they really existed. I don't know if you've ever heard about these. The basic idea is this: you go into a business and get paid to be a customer. Of course you aren't paid by the people working at the business. You are paid by the boss to be a sort of spy. Basically, your secret shoppers job consists of watching what happens in the business, noting how you are treated by the employees, and then filling out some paperwork. You actually get paid to fill out a few surveys after eating lunch for free! Needless to say, I was excited at the prospect.
Looking back, I think I was a little bit naive about the secret shopper job. After all, if a secret shoppers job was as good as all that, they would all be taken. There would be a whole profession that would have formed around them, and you would have to have years of experience to even get in the door. A secret shoppers job is not something you can make a living it. No matter how diligently you work, you are likely to receive very little other than a free meal or a complementary pair of shoes now and then. The real thrill in the secret shoppers job is not the money. The real thrill is getting something for free, and being paid to spy.
I would go out once or twice a weekend, either getting a free meal are going out to see a movie. Occasionally I would get to work at a clothing store, but this was a rare treat. To be honest, what I really liked about the secret shoppers job was not the free stuff. It was the power that I felt. When I would go in and watch employees, the decisions I made influenced whether or not they would be retained in the future. If I wrote a negative enough review in my secret shoppers job, it could actually lead to someone getting fired. If, on the other hand, I wrote a glowing review, it could conceivably lead to a promotion. Then I would be gone, and the people there would be none the wiser. I felt almost like a CIA operative!
