Background check(s)
As an employer that hires dozens of people in the course of a year, I have started to perform background checks on potential candidates. In previous years, I never took the extra time to bother with actually doing any research on candidates; it did not seem worthwhile. However, with this country seeing more and more scams and crises, it has become clear that people need to know their employees better than before. Gone are the days, for most companies, in which your personal life and history was kept private. Now, bosses want to know where you came from and whether or not you?re an upstanding citizen. More drug tests are being performed when accepting a job offer. Some governmental companies require that a polygraph test be taken before being hired as well.
It has become easier for someone to create an identity and live a new life. Should a person like that apply for a job at my company, I want that to come to light. I don?t have time for anyone who has a disturbing history of drug abuse, crime or an unstable work history. That?s the sort of thing that companies are looking for when they perform a background check. In fact, a background can uncover driving records, bankruptcies, military records, character references and many other things. If I come across someone who I feel will not be productive or a downfall for my company, they will not be offered a second interview. I only want employees who are interested in success.
Companies may hire a private investigator to perform a background check or find a company whose sole purpose is to conduct background checks. Fees can be a bit high at times but it may be saving your company lots of money if you don?t have a background check and end up with a worthless employee. If a company or individual wants to conduct a background check on someone, they must have that individual?s permission and signature. In giving your permission, you are allowing them to access your credit report, practically all records that involve you and even talk to your friends, neighbors and relatives about you and your personality. It is almost scary what types of information will come to surface once a background check is being conducted. Just remember though, if you gave your consent and your permission for the background check to be performed, there isn?t too much that you can do if some information is dug up that shouldn?t have been.
I have managed to find some absolutely wonderful and dedicated employees since I?ve started spending more time on the hiring process. Doing a background check on each employee has been incredibly worthwhile.
